This Beta uses Sony's dual pancake reel motor for tape movement. It has two motors instead of one to control tape travel. How is this different and better? Most Betas use one central motor that has a pendulum that swings back and forth to perform reverse and forward tape movement. Going forward, the back tension is controlled by a tension arm (lever) attached to a friction band wrapped around the supply reel. Reverse tension for scanning is regulated by a slip clutch on the take-up reel. This system is reliable, durable, and cost effective. The only way to improve this would be to have a separate motor for each reel. This better dual-type motor assembly is used in this beta. Tape tension in both directions is controlled using an electronic pickup that measures the pull of the tape coming from the reels. The main advantage of this more costly system is accuracy and the ability of the VCR to operate in any position, even upside down. It is not affected by gravity, thus making it ideal for portable Betas. ©Misterßetamax go to homepage |
