DESIGN GROUPING

Design grouping is an informal method for comparing Beta VCRs based upon their features, reliability, operation, release date, intent, popularity and more. It takes these traits into consideration then paints an overall picture of a particular model and how it measures up to others within its respective group. For example a popular simple basic Betamax like the SL-2300 would not be considered in the same group as a heavy hitter like the SL-HF900. The first one is monaural, records and plays only the standard picture and has just the minimum of features. While the other is a SuperBetahi-fi that has everything Sony could throw at it. There is no real comparison between the two so neither would be judged the same as the other. Furthermore they both came out in different time periods, the first one coming out years before the other. Also their intended consumer was very different. So what constitutes a design group for comparison purposes? A basic nominal Beta would apply across a number of years and models. So would the premium, superior, ultimate and unique model designation. SuperBeta would be a factor and so would Betahi-fi. Consolidated together these characteristics would form a group that would be a mix of release date, intended consumer, overall value, performance and popularity. Each VCR is rated within their respective category. Click on the model number of the VCR to learn more about this VCR or click here for a listing of the design groups.
