In this composite photo above you can better see the mechanics of the tension regulator arm and band used with the number one guide. The part of the arm that contacts the tape is the metal pin mounted into it. It is shown in the circle and magnified greatly on the left. Look specifically at the regulator arm on the left, then look closely at the one on the right. Running up and down on the pin at the right is a flat spot that has been created over time by the oxide coating of the tape passing over it. The one on the left is new and you can clearly see that it is nicely rounded. What can happen when the pin on the arm wears flat is the tape drags as it travels over it. This tape drag can cause the arm to vibrate and shake. This shows up in the picture as wavy lines or saw-teeth. It can become so serious that an audible squeal will be heard coming from the machine. All Beta VCRs I refurbish have this pin either replaced or renewed. Next we move on to guides two and three located on the THREADING RING, click here. To go back to the REEL TABLE page click here.
