REEL TABLE ASSEMBLY
To add strength and stability every Beta has all the cassette and tape handling components mounted on a single solid frame or base. It is seen In the picture above on the left. The type shown is from a later model Sony Beta and it is made of stamped metal with metal and plastic fittings, bosses and pins molded on or into it. The frames changed slightly through the years, and some manufacturers used fiber-impregnated composition plastic as their base frame material, but the purpose was the same. They serve as the rigid platform on which to place all the necessary components needed to handle the video cartridge and tape. The reel motor assembly shown here, with the flat pendulum motor identified, is of a late design. It is a seperate component mounted beneath and to the frame. This was done early on to simplify manufacture and repair. It can be seen in the frame at left as a ghost image and it is also illustrated in the upper right. Sometimes the frame can become damaged; plastic mounts can get broken or pins can get bent, when this happens it usually can be repaired but if it is too severe the frame must be replaced. The reel table always receives attention and has several areas of adjustment or correction, so we are going to cover it shortly in detail.
